Josey aces U.S. Open halfpipe in Quaker State

Big West series comes to Dollar Thursday

Hailey’s Chase Josey, 18, put together a creative and athletic run to place first in an impressive Burton U.S. Open men’s halfpipe field Sunday at Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania, one hour from Pittsburgh.

U.S. Snowboarding said Josey put down an amazing run to finish in first place. He stomped a perfect michalchuk, a frontside double cork 900, a cab 1080, a crippler, a massive method and a frontside 900 on his way to a first-place total of 97.20 points.

The top six men and women in the Seven Springs competition earned semi-final berths in the 32nd Burton U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships March 3-8 at Golden Peak Terrain Park in Vail, Co. Invited athletes to the first competition after the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics include Shaun White, Louie Vito, Taylor Gold, Greg Bretz and Scotty Lago.

Sunday’s competition in Pennsylvania featured typical East Coast weather with rain and fog blanketing the pipe.

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Gold Team rider Josey sealed his spot in Vail by finishing more than a point ahead of runner-up Ikkou Anai (95.80), the talented Japanese rider just back from the Burton European Open. In third was 14-year-old Gabe Ferguson of Bend, Ore. (90.20).
