Wrestlers salute seniors tonight in Hailey

Two champs for WRHS at New Plymouth

Coming off a successful Saturday at the R.D. Brown Invitational tournament in New Plymouth, the Wood River High School wrestling team pauses to honor four hard-working seniors today, Wednesday at “Senior Night” festivities on the Hailey mat.

Wood River has a Great Basin Conference dual meet today at 6 p.m. against Canyon Ridge for its regular-season finale. Coach Shawn Huntington will congratulate seniors Cooper Bailey, Kyle Clark, Kaleb Guisasola and Riley Beck.

During the ceremony, three-time state qualifier and two-time district champ Bailey (32-4 season, 112-37 career) will sign his letter-of-intent to wrestle at Nebraska’s Concordia University. His brother Tommy studies and wrestles at Concordia.

Kyle Clark is a four-year varsity wrestler and Beck has wrestled varsity at Wood River for three years. Guisasola qualified for state last year.

Bailey and Hailey sophomore Colby Castle, also a state qualifier in 2013, earned first-place finishes Saturday during the 100-wrestler, 13-school New Plymouth varsity meet.

Castle earned 23 team points and Bailey added 22 helping the six-wrestler Wolverine varsity to seventh place in the team standings with 76 points. Ahead of Wood River were Fruitland 164, McCall-Donnelly 142, Kuna 133.5, Nyssa (Ore.) 105, Ontario (Ore.) 104 and Columbia (98).

Huntington said, “Really proud of the guys. They had two weeks without competition but I thought they came out and wrestled well.”

Bailey won a 12-2 major decision in the 132-pound semi-final over Jose Stevens of Ontario and captured the first-place match 12-6 over Nathan Altamirano of Kuna. Castle (9-8) took his 98-pound semi-final with a 1:13 pin over Kuna’s Carson Wilcock and then beat Nyssa’s Gavin Hartley 10-3 in the first-place match.

At 160 pounds, Clark (14-8 season) charged through the consolation bracket and ended up with four pins (at 5:40, 1:46, 1:48 and 4:07) for third place. He lost only to Bailey King of Fruitland (18-13) by 14-6 major decision in the quarterfinal.

Wood River sophomore 120-pounder Ryan Anderson (19-9, 51-20 career), a defending district champ having another fine season, settled for fourth place winning 10-0 and 8-6 decisions, plus losses to Juan Sanchez of Columbia (3:33 fall) in a semi-final and 13-11 to Bishop Kelly’s Rapheal Rodriguez in sudden-victory.

Also competing in the varsity meet were Guisasola (7-10) at 126 pounds and James Thomas at 106.

Hailey junior varsity wrestlers were Riley Beck (2nd place 132), Hans Heaphy (2nd place 145), Cameron Bingham (2nd place 145), Aramys Gallegos (3rd place 138), Irving Gonzalez at 120 and Ben Romero at 160.
