Sun Valley Youth Hockey teams have been busy with home and out-of-town tournaments recently. Here are some highlights:
SVYH Peewees second in home tournament
The Sun Valley Youth Hockey Peewees (ages 11-12) placed second in their six-team home tournament Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 25-26 at Sun Valley Skating Center.
The young Suns played a solid game against the Jackson Hole (Wyo.) Moose in the Jan. 26 championship game before falling 3-2. Fletcher Stumph scored both goals and goalie Andrew Nelson (52 saves in four games) made 17 stops.
Earlier on the tournament’s final day, the host Peewees rallied from a two-goal deficit and earned their title game berth with a 6-4 comeback triumph over Idaho Falls. Trailing 4-2 with two minutes left, the Suns scored four rapid-succession goals by Seamus O’Connell, D.J. Gralenski, O’Connell again and Teagan McAvoy—the final two coming in the last 26 seconds.
Coach Doug Yeates’ Peewee Suns (1-2-1, 19-12 goals-against) also lost 3-0 to Jackson Hole, defeated Salmon 10-1 and tied Boise Hawks 1-1. Their weekend scorers (goals/assists) were:

High school skaters at Butte
Placing fifth with a 1-3-1 record at a Butte (Mt.) tournament Jan. 25-26 was the SVYH high school squad. Sun Valley defeated Havre (Mt.) 4-2 with Roger Figge, George Everitt, Jack Seiller and Riley Sibbach scoring goals. The local Midgets also lost to Billings (Mt.) 5-2, to Butte 4-2 in a “friendly,” and to Great Falls (Mt.) 3-2, along with a 3-3 tie against Butte.
Other goal scorers were Erik Wilander (5), Figge (2), Seiller (1) and Solomon Martinez (1). Goalie Willis Sanchez-duPont made 44 saves in the 3-3 Butte tie.
U-14 girls travel to Missoula
Goalie Evi Johnson (44 saves in three games) led the SVYH U-14 girls to a second-place finish at a recent tournament in Missoula, Mt.
Sun Valley went 2-2-0 with two shutouts and outscored opponents 22-8. Johnson made 23 saves in the 3-2 championship game setback against Calgary, Alberta including three in an overtime shootout. Denali Stevens and Paige Asbell scored Suns goals in the final game.

Squirts skaters at Salmon
SVYH Squirts (ages 9-10) sent two teams to the Jan. 25-26 Salmon tournament. Sun Valley White (2-2-0) captured fourth place with wins over Victor and Salmon 4-3, and Sun Valley Black (1-3-0) finished in seventh place, beating Victor.
In the SV White 4-3 win over Salmon, Deke Burrell tallied two goals including an assist from Jessie Burks on the game winner. Burks and Ashton Tanner also scored. Weekend scoring for SV White:
Deke Burrell 6/1; Ashton Tanner 5/0; Colby Speth 3/1; Jessie Burks 2/1; Finn Naghsh 1/1; Wilson Webster 1/0; Jake Nikolaisons 1/0; and Taylor Nelson 0/1. Goalie Max Jenson made 24 saves on 30 shots, and goalie Colby Speth came up with five saves on seven shots. Also skating were Caroline Seaward, Nils Huss and Katelyn Moreland.
SV Black weekend scorers were: Zach Benson 9/0; Slater Whitehead 7/6; Clayton Elsbree 3/0; Oliver Wiedemann 1/1; Carter Sammis 1/0; Zane Lyon 1/1; Eleanor Sammis 1/0; Dylan Bauer 0/1; and Sebastian Buxton 0/1. Goalies were Clayton Elsbree (55 saves on 74 shots), Oliver Wiedemann (16 saves on 23 shots) and Sebastian Buxton (4 saves on 6 shots). Also skating were Maddy Dunn and Lola Randolph.
