Sun Valley partners with Tahoe resorts

Promotion began after addition of San Francisco flight

For the duration of the winter ski season, Sun Valley Resort has partnered with the Sugar Bowl and Royal Gorge resort group to allow Sun Valley’s full-season pass and Sun Plus pass holders to recreate at the Northern California destination for free.
The deal is reciprocated for Sugar Bowl and Royal Gorge season pass holders, as they are allowed to ski and snowboard on Bald and Dollar mountains in Sun Valley for free.
Sugar Bowl is a popular alpine ski resort in the Lake Tahoe area of California. Royal Gorge is a vast cross-country ski trail system adjacent to Sugar Bowl.
In order for season pass holders of Sugar Bowl or Royal Gorge to ski on Baldy or Dollar for free, they are required to stay at the resort. Those who have Sun Valley season passes or Sun Plus passes can receive discounted lodging rates at the Lodge at Sugar Bowl.
“We haven’t had staggering numbers for this promotion,” Sun Valley Resort spokesman Jack Sibbach said. “But for the people that have come from California to ski here, all I have heard is that they love it.”
The agreement between the resorts was reached following the addition of a direct San Francisco flight to Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey. According to www.sunvalley.com, there will be no blackout dates for the promotion. Discounts for Sun Valley season pass or Sun Plus pass holders on room rates at the Lodge at Sugar Bowl are available based on space availability and can be subject to blackouts.
“With the new San Francisco flight, it was another way to let the Bay Area know about the flight,” Sibbach said. “There was definitely a public relations and promotional aspect to this, and they promised to promote the flight.”
Sibbach said he is unsure if the promotion will continue after the current winter season.
“We will have to re-evaluate, and re-decide on both sides whether we’ll want to do this again,” Sibbach said. “The evaluation will be made after the winter season.”
According to Sugar Bowl’s official website, www.sugarbowl.com, the resort typically has abundant snowfall, has four distinct peaks, 102 trails and a 6,883-foot base elevation. Royal Gorge is North America’s largest cross country ski resort, with 200 kilometers of groomed trails across 6,000 acres of terrain.
“Both resorts are private ones with rich history similar to Sun Valley,” Sibbach said. “They fit the brand very well.”
