Flood, “Cheeso” alpine races back on Baldy

Long running IMD races start Friday

One of the longest running alpine ski events for junior racers returns to Baldy over the Groundhog Day/Super Bowl weekend, presented by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF).

Laura Flood Memorial FIS Intermountain Cup giant slalom and slalom races for the A, U-21 and U-18 classes are Friday through Sunday, Jan. 31-Feb. 2. They will coincide with the Cheeso Memorial U-16 qualifying races, also on Hemingway and Cozy ski runs.

The 24th annual Flood Memorial honors the memory of the Sun Valley racer who died in 1990 at 19. Giant slaloms are Friday and Saturday on Hemingway, with slalom Sunday on Cozy. Flood combined winners last year were SVSEF racer Kipling Weisel and Canadian Megan Henkelman.

One of the giant slaloms in 2013 was called the Allan Patterson Memorial, named for the Hailey downhiller who died in 1977 at 20. Patterson Memorial winners last year were SVSEF racer Jordan Fitzgerald and Bryan Cookson of Rowmark Ski Academy.

The third annual Cheeso Memorial salutes Craig "Cheeso" Kjesbo. He died of cancer in Jan. 2009 at age 57. For 26 years, he was one of the best and most influential SVSEF coaches.

“Cheeso” races for 14-15 age classes are slalom on Friday and Saturday on Cozy, with giant slalom Sunday on Hemingway. “Cheeso” combined winners last year were SVSEF racer Samantha Busby and Alexander Birkner of Beaver Mountain (Utah) Ski Team.

Awards for the separate race events will be presented Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Apple’s Bar & Grill.
