Greatest show on snow

Reggae festival will wrap up the Sun Valley Nordic Festival

If you’re sore from a day at the Boulder Mountain Tour and even if you’re not, reggae can heal with its soul-stirring rhythms and gentle sway.
The sixth annual Reggae in the Mountains festival will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, in Ketchum Town Plaza.
Organizer and event founder Danny Walton has created a great reggae showcase with a number of artists, starting with Sol Horizon, a nine-piece band from California voted best reggae and world music in the San Francisco Bay Area and Natural Roots from Salt Lake City. The show starts at 5 p.m. to coincide with the finish of the popular Boulder Mountain Tour ski race Saturday, the culmination of a number of events that make up the Sun Valley Nordic Festival.

It’s important to preserve our ski culture, have cultural
diversity and have events to attract a younger demographic to our community.”

Organizer

“Last year it was well received, so they asked us again,” Walton said. “It’s a winter celebration and you have all these amped-up skiers from the Boulder Mountain Tour and it’s a good way to celebrate their winter accomplishment.”
A concert pre-party will take place at Lefty’s Bar and Grill in Ketchum at 4 p.m. There will be an after-party at Whiskey Jacques’ in Ketchum that will start around 10 p.m. with Soul Medic, Jah Wave and Lions Den Unlimited Sounds.
“This is the only reggae festival in the state of Idaho and the only annual winter, outdoor reggae festival in the nation,” Walton said. “It’s also among the most affordable concerts of the year.”
The tributes began six years ago to celebrate reggae legend Bob Marley’s birthday. These tributes happen in more than 120 countries around the world each February.
“It’s important to preserve our ski culture, have cultural diversity and have events to attract a younger demographic to our community,” Walton said.
Tickets are on sale at Atkinsons’ markets in Ketchum and Hailey, Johnny G’s Subshack, Backwoods Mountain Sports and Zenergy in Ketchum, and online at http://reggaeinthemountains.com/. Tickets are $15 pre-sale and $20 at the show.
