Lights, pucks and outdoor hockey action!

Pond Classic provides a classic ending

    Leave it to committed pond hockey players!
    They played to the absolute end, which in the case of the seventh annual Idaho Pond Hockey Classic Jan. 18-19 meant a championship game shootout finished with the lighting assistance of the At-kinson Park plow truck last Saturday evening about 7 p.m.
    Christina Potters Ice Rink in Ketchum was the setting for last weekend’s two-day meet blessed with sunny and mild weather that attracted a record 21 teams for Saturday’s “B Di-vision” competition.
    Teams from Boise, Washing-ton State and Boston clashed in friendly competition for the coveted “Golden Shovel” prize.
    Capturing the “B Division” 3-2 in Saturday’s shootout un-der improvised lighting was “Team Whiskeys” with Dave Klemer, Bobby Farrelly, Billy Cook, Ki Steiner, Mark Belan-ger and Bryan O’Connell. Whiskeys edged “Team USA” with Hannah Carr, Aley Ra-doslovich, Anders Pedersen, Jen Embree, Brenda Moczygemba and Doug Yeates.
    “Team Farva” claimed Sun-day’s six-team “A Division” with Spencer Brendel, Sinjin Thomas, Max Kwok, Danny Ward, John Sibbach, Matt Ward and Joey Sides. They won 7-5 over “Franks Skates and Gloves” featuring Charles Friedman, Brad Stansberry, Dave Hennessy, Rian Tim-mons, Frank Salvoni and Doug Yeates.
    Sponsors were City of Ketchum, Sun Valley Brewery, Blaine County Recreation Dis-trict, Atkinsons’ Market, Falls Brand Meats, Monge Construc-tion (building the goals) and Play Hard Give Back. Organ-izer John Kearney said there were around 165 participants and 500-plus spectators.

Girls’ hockey tourney
    While the outdoor hockey tournament was happening, the Sun Valley Youth Hockey U-14 girls were playing indoors last weekend in a tournament at Sun Valley Skating Center. Sun Valley’s U-14 entry fin-ished second, falling 4-3 to Team Wyoming in Sunday’s final game.
    Sun Valley defeated Salmon 7-0 and McCall 3-0, while also losing 4-1 to Team Wyoming at the weekend meet.
    Goals/assists totals for Sun Valley were: Morgan Benson 4/0; Daisy Buxton 0/3; Taylor Hebert 1/1; Kasey Johnson 1/0; Megan Johnston 2/2; Audra Mary 1/1; Sophie Nasvik 1/0; Sydney Roberts 3/0; Denali Stevens 0/2; and Anik Zarkos 1/2. Goalie was Evi Johnson (68 saves).
    Game pucks went to Abigail Benson, Sydney Roberts, Scout Hutchinson and Evi Johnson.
