Olympian to run for state Legislature

Dick Fosbury announces campaign

    Former Olympian and retired engineer Dick Fosbury announced to the Idaho Mountain Express today that he will run for a seat in the state House of Representatives, representing District 26.
   Fosbury will make a formal presentation for the press and members of the Democratic Party at Oak Street Foods, on the corner of Main and Oak Streets in Bellevue, at 3 p.m. Monday.
   “I will talk about my platform. It is pretty straightforward,” Fosbury said. “As a college graduate, and retired professional engineer, education is high on my list of requirements in order to make advancements in life. The state funding of education means incomes, but we [Idaho] have one of the lowest family incomes in the country.”
   “As an engineer, I understand the challenge, but also the mistake of deferring maintenance. The proposed budget by the governor is not funding long-term maintenance proposals for school districts and highways. I believe strongly that we need to stay on top of that in order to create jobs, and minimize the end costs to taxpayers,” he said.
   Fosbury won a gold medal in the high jump at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, using an innovative technique that was dubbed “the Fosbury Flop.”
   He won the gold medal while studying as a junior at Oregon State University.
