City administrator might be leaving

Gary Marks considering move to Oregon

Ketchum City Administrator Gary Marks is considering leaving his post to take another city administrator position.
Marks, an Oregon native, told the Idaho Mountain Express he plans to interview for the city administrator position in Lebanon, Ore.
“I have elderly parents living in Oregon,” Marks said. “It’s time for me to be a responsible son, even though I don’t want to change.”
After serving as the city manager of Whitefish, Mont., Marks took over as Ketchum’s city administrator in August 2008.
New Ketchum Mayor Nina Jonas said that if Marks leaves his position, a search committee would be set up to find a new city administrator.
“I would prefer to have our city administrator be from Ketchum,” Jonas said. “However, their expertise and knowledge are the most important things. We will also be looking for candidates who have very good people skills.”
   Former Mayor Randy Hall said he had a great working relationship with Marks.
   “We’ve been lucky to have him,” Hall said. “He was the right guy for us at the right time. He helped us navigate through the toughest financial times we’ve had to deal with since the Great Depression. Also, he is very creative and smart, which allowed him to come up with very innovative solutions.”
   Hall added that he’s not surprised that Marks could leave.
   “City administrators now work on average between five to six years,” Hall said. “The days of people spending their whole careers here are over. For me, it’s no surprise that he wants to leave.”
