Writer Ian Frazier to speak in Ketchum Feb. 6

    Acclaimed writer and humorist Ian Frazier is the next speaker to appear as part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ 2013–2014 Lecture Series.
   Frazier, an author and contributor to The New Yorker, will speak on Thursday, Feb. 6, as part of the multidisciplinary project on travel now being exhibited at The Center entitled “Wish You Were Here!”
   As a staff writer for The New Yorker, Frazier has written numerous articles and humorous sketches and has contributed to the magazine’s popular “Talk of the Town” section, said Katelyn Ziegler, director of education and humanities.
   Frazier is also known for his travel writing—work in which he combines first-person narrative with in-depth research.
   He has plumbed his own travel experiences to produce books such as “Great Plains,” “On the Rez,” and “Travels in Siberia,” collections of his anecdotes and impressions.
   Frazier’s presentation will explore the concept of travel vacationing versus journeying, encouraging reflection on what motivates travel.
   “In the context of our multidisciplinary project, it’s intriguing to consider Frazier’s take on how our travel experiences differ from our expectations and to what degree we get to know the places we visit,” Ziegler said.
   “Wish You Were Here!” is an exploration of travel, tourism and the American road trip. In addition to lectures, the two-month project includes a visual-arts exhibition, films, live theatre performance and several educational and interactive opportunities.
   Frazier will speak at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of the Big Wood in Ketchum.
