SPORTS SUMMARY


Billy Goat Loppet at Baker Creek on Saturday

     The Sun Valley Ski Club’s Billy Goat Loppet cross-country ski race on a 12-kilometer freestyle course is Saturday, Jan. 18 starting at 11 a.m. in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area north of Ketchum. Register at the north end of Baker Creek parking lot from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Entry fee is $10. Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation junior team members compete for free.

     Due to shortages of snow, the event used by many racers as a Boulder Ski Tour tune-up will be staged starting at the north end of Baker Creek, then run up to Prairie Creek with a turnaround back to the Baker Creek start. Race sponsor is Backwoods Mountain Sports, with product and treats by Hammer Nutrition and Perry’s Restaurant.

WRHS wrestlers in action at Treasure Valley dual meets

     Six Wood River High School wrestlers coached by Shawn Huntington took part in Saturday’s series of dual meets called the Treasure Valley duals in the Boise area. Wood River paired up with Marsing mat-men to compete against wrestlers from Payette, Emmett, Middleton, Fruitland and Skyview of Nampa.

     Cooper Bailey (16-2 season) went 3-0 in his 132-pound matches including two pins and a 14-4 major decision. Ryan Anderson (11-5) won four of his five 120-pound matches with two pins, a 14-6 major and 4-1 decision. Kyle Clark (3-3) went 3-2 with three pins at 160 pounds. Kaleb Guisasola (4-2) was 2-2 with two pins at 126. Also wrestling were Hans Heaphy (4-8) at 152 pounds and James Thomas (1-7) at 106.

 

Girls hockey meet Jan. 18-19

     Sun Valley Youth Hockey U-14 girls will host a two-day, four-team tournament Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 18-19 at Sun Valley Skating Center. Saturday’s game schedule is:

     9 a.m. Team Wyoming vs. McCall; 10:25 a.m. Sun Valley vs. Salmon; 1:30 p.m. Wyoming vs. Sun Valley; 2:50 p.m. McCall vs. Salmon; 6 p.m. Sun Valley vs. McCall; and 7:25 p.m. Wyoming vs. Salmon.

 

B+ hockey standings tighten

     Two teams are tied for second place behind league-leading Hutch’s Bad Dogs after Sunday’s B+ Hockey action at Sun Valley Skating Center.

     Flounders (5-3-1) got three-goal hat tricks from Jeff Ballou and Will Hemmings for a 7-3 decision over Sharks (2-6-1). Clark Shafer added a Flounders goal, while Terry Crawford and Dave Klemer each notched two assists. Sharks scorers were Jennifer Embree, Dave Gittens and Ted Kelley.

     Lampl’s (3-6-0) upset Aardvarks (5-3-1) by a 4-2 score. Todd Avison scored two goals with one assist for Lampl’s. Matt Bauer and Jonathan Hubbard also scored for the winners. Assists went to Kevin Lenane, Chris Peterson and Clark Shafer. Rob Prew tallied two goals for Aardvarks.

     Hutch’s Bad Dogs (7-0-2) stayed unbeaten 3-2 over Sun Valley Auto Club/Vipers (2-6-1). Hutch’s goals came from Andy Bloedorn (1 assist), Tom Cahill and Mark Elsbree, with Shannon Flavin picking up an assist. Travis Kilmer and Greg Townley let the Vipers light.

     On Sunday, Jan. 19: 4 p.m. Vipers vs. Sharks; 5:15 p.m. Flounders vs. Lampl’s; 6:30 p.m. Bad Dogs vs. Aardvarks; 7:45 p.m. Flyers vs. Wild; and 9 p.m. Racers vs. Blues.

 

BCRD offers Youth Nordic Skiing program starting Jan. 22

     The Blaine County Recreation District on Monday announced plans for a six-week after-school cross-country ski program for boys and girls in grades 2-5—happening at Croy Nordic near downtown Hailey.

     Skiing days are Wednesdays from Jan. 22 through Feb. 26, from 3-4:30 p.m. each day. If there isn’t enough snow, plans call for playing games and having fun outside.

     Cost is $85 for six weeks of instruction, not including equipment cost. A dedicated school bus will transport children from their schools to the Croy Nordic site. Parents are responsible for picking up their kids after the sessions.
