Doug Stouffer promoted to head WRHS girls’ soccer coach

Entering his 15th year with the program

Bellevue’s Doug Stouffer has been promoted to head coach of the Wood River High School girls’ varsity soccer team, a position Stouffer also held successfully for four seasons in Hailey from 2000-03.

Stouffer has also been the WRHS girls’ junior varsity soccer coach from 2004-13, meaning that he has been involved in the program building young student-athletes as varsity and JV coach for 14 years.

Wood River High School athletic director John Rade announced Stouffer’s appointment in a statement Friday. Stouffer replaces Jenni Conrad of Hailey, the five-year Wolverine head coach who resigned this past fall for personal and professional obligations, Rade said.

In an email, Rade wrote, “Fortunately for Wood River High School, we have a member of our current girls’ soccer staff who is more than qualified, and has the necessary experience, expertise and compassion to lead our young ladies for many years to come.”

Stouffer’s first season as WRHS varsity coach, in 2000 when the Wolverines entered the 3A division for the first time, resulted in a 17-0-2 record, an impressive 107-5 goals-against average led by Robin Kearns’ 20 goals, and the State 3A soccer championship in the first year of sanctioning by the Idaho High School Activities Association.

It is one of two state girls’ soccer titles won by WRHS, the first coming in 1995 ending an 11-0-1 season for coach Tizz Strachan Miller when the season-ending tournament was sponsored by the Idaho Youth Soccer Association.

Stouffer’s 54-19-8 varsity coaching record included district championships in 2001 and 2003, State 3A consolation championships in 2001-02, and the State 3A second-place tournament title in 2003.

After Greg Gvozdas of Ketchum took over the program as head coach in 2004, the same year Wood River moved to the 4A division, Stouffer stayed on staff as girls’ junior varsity soccer coach. In 10 seasons filling that position, he amassed a 90-30-4 overall JV record.

Stouffer said, “My hope is I can fill some shoes at the 4A level.”

Employed by the Blaine County School District as a Wood River High School mathematics teacher for 15 years, Stouffer has five children with his wife Susan. He graduated from Eastern Washington University with a degree in Math Education and starting coaching soccer here in 2000.
