First dual meet win for WHRS matmen

Bailey places at Rollie Lane meet

Wood River High School senior Cooper Bailey and sophomore Ryan Anderson continued to lead the Wolverine wrestling team that won its first dual meet Tuesday 40-24 over the Buhl Tribe, at Burley.

The Wolverines also gave up six weight classes to forfeits and lost 48-34 to host Burley. Wood River head coach Shawn Huntington said about the triangular meet, “A lot of forfeits, but all in all a pretty good night for matches wrestled.”

Bailey (15-2) earned 10-2 and 11-2 major decisions against Burley and Buhl. Last weekend, Bailey won five of his seven matches in the 132-class during the 51-team Rollie Lane Invitational in Nampa.

Placing fourth in his class, Bailey recorded 8-2, 6-1, 8-3 and 5-4 decisions plus a first-round pin in his opening match. He lost twice by 4-2 and 3-2 decisions to third-place Grayson Munn of Crook County High in Prineville, Ore. The 132-pound winner was Kuna senior Michael Cook, last year’s State 4A 126-pound champ.

Teams from Idaho, Alaska, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming competed in the prestigious two-day Rollie Lane tournament. Crook County captured the team title 106-94 over second-place Kuna. Gooding’s Cole McGinnis won the 285-pound championship Saturday.

On Tuesday night, Bailey and Anderson (9-4) each picked up two wins for Wood River at 132 and 120 pounds respectively—Anderson with two pins. Senior Kyle Clark (1-2) earned his first victory with a first-period pin against Buhl at 160.

Posting wins by fall during the Burley dual meet were sophomore Colby Castle (9-5) at 98, freshman James Thomas (3-3) at 106 and senior Kaleb Guisasola (3-1).

Wood River travels to the Treasure Valley duals tournament Saturday, Jan. 11 at Skyview in Nampa.
