Defense lifts Cutthroat boys to league win

45-38 over Camas Mushers

     Strong team defense that led to 13 blocked shots lifted the Community School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 45-38 home win over the Camas County Mushers on Tuesday at the Fish Tank in Sun Valley.

     Coach Mike Payne’s Cutthroats (2-3) captured their first Northside Conference 1A Division 2 victory of the season with three players in double figures for the night.

     They were senior Doug DuFur (12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists), senior Reed Roudabush (12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists, 5 blocked shots) and senior Taylor Adler (11 points, 6 boards, 2 steals, 2 assists, 3 blocks).

     Garrett Rawlings (5 points, 3 boards, 2 steals), a Cutthroat sophomore, chipped in with four blocked shots and sophomore Alex Feldman added a block. Soph Daniel DuFur (5 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals) also contributed for the Fish.

     Blocking three shots and forcing seven Musher turnovers in the first quarter, the Cutthroats jumped to an 11-2 lead and went into halftime with a 22-12 advantage. The lead crested at 13 points in the third period before 6-2 junior Isaac Simon sparked a Musher comeback that cut it to 36-32.

     Top scorers for coach Jamon Frostenson’s Mushers (3-5) were Simon (14 points, 7 rebounds) and soph Erick Peterson (14 points, 6 boards, 2 assists). Others were junior Jordan Moore (4 points, 10 rebounds, 1 block), Austin Burns (4 points, 3 boards, 2 steals) and junior Chris Eaton (2 points, 6 rebounds).

     Payne’s squad hosted the league-leading Dietrich Blue Devils (8-0) Thursday night, Dietrich most recently beating Hansen 80-44 and Hagerman 59-51. The Carey Panthers (3-4) come to Sun Valley for a league game Monday, Jan. 13.
