Burley boys storm back, down WRHS 60-33

Riverhawks top Wolverine girls 47-37

     Wood River High School’s basketball teams returned to action this week after the holiday break with two games.

     The Wolverine boys put together a fine start Wednesday night, building a 10-point first-quarter lead in their Great Basin Conference home game against the Burley Bobcats, but ended up losing 60-33.

     Burley (6-2, 1-1) drilled nine 3-pointers in bouncing back from a 56-54 loss at Preston last Saturday and posting their first GBC triumph of 2013-14.

     In Twin Falls Tuesday night, the Wood River girls shot well from the field and kept pace with the Canyon Ridge Riverhawks for much of the GBC contest before ultimately falling 47-37.

     The Wood River girls (4-7, 0-5 league) will try to snap their six-game losing skid on Friday, Jan. 10 at home against the Kimberly Bulldogs. The Wolverines defeated host Kimberly 26-22 back Nov. 20.

     And the Wolverine boys (0-7, 0-2 league) will visit Kimberly Friday, Jan. 10 for a non-conference game. Wood River took Kimberly into overtime with a 20-point fourth quarter before losing 77-71 back on Dec. 4 in Hailey.

     The 3A Kimberly boys (6-3) defeated the 4A Canyon Ridge visitors 51-40 Tuesday, then Canyon Ridge (1-8, 0-2) lost 50-48 at home in overtime to the Minico Spartans (3-5, 2-0) on Wednesday.

     The Wood River boys then open a three-game home-stand on Tuesday, Jan. 14 against Sugar-Salem of Sugar City (6-3), followed by the visit of league-leading Twin Falls next Thursday and 3A Filer for a matinee on Saturday, Jan. 18.

     Twin Falls and Burley were last year’s GBC boys’ finalists in the double elimination tournament won by Twin Falls 52-40 and 63-58 through the loser bracket. They’re looking like the top teams once again. Host Twin Falls (6-3, 2-0) humbled Jerome 68-31 Wednesday. Jerome (3-4, 1-1) has won a GBC game 49-44 at Canyon Ridge.

 

Burley owns middle quarters

     Sophomore guard Alec Nordsieck (team-high 8 points) buried two 3-pointers and five Wolverine boys put points on the board while building a 16-6 lead after the first seven minutes against Burley.

     Yet Burley, with no players over 6-1 in height and a dominating in-your-face man-to-man defense, took off on a 30-6 run in the next 13 minutes. In the middle quarters the Bobcats outscored Wood River 40-9 and won by 27 points.

     The Wolverines committed 13 of their 20 turnovers in the second and third periods. Burley’s defense kept Wood River from running its offensive effectively—and the Bobcat outside shooting kicked into gear.

     Senior guard Braylan Bean, noticing his teammates were slow off the mark, popped three 3-pointers to account for all of Burley’s points in the first period. Bean (game-high 19 points, 4 assists) ended with six 3-pointers for the game.

     Wood River coach Andy Miles was glad to welcome back senior Eron Bates from an arm injury that kept him out of two games prior to the Christmas holiday. Bates (7 points, 3 rebounds) was a leader on the floor, once again.

     The Wolverines also blocked five shots—two apiece by Cody Carter (2 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 4 assists) and Kevin Hernandez (5 points, 4 boards, 2 steals), and one block by Jon Scott (4 points). Other scorers were Arthur Brugger (3 points), Nic Tidwell (2 points) and Cade Schott (2-for-2 free throws).

     Nine Bobcats made the scoring column including senior Brandon Hosteen (10 points, 3 rebounds) and senior Karsten Hinckley (6 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals). The Wolverines out-rebounded Burley 20-13 but couldn’t match their perimeter-oriented offense.

 

‘Hawks win at the line

     The Canyon Ridge Riverhawk girls (2-10, 1-4) picked up their first GBC victory Tuesday night 47-37 with a 15-6 advantage in scoring at the free throw line, at Twin Falls.

     Wood River shot well from the field, 46% including three 3-pointers, yet scored 6-for-11 at the line and committed 24 turnovers for the game. The ’Hawks led 14-11 at halftime, 31-26 after three and stretched their lead to 10 points with a 16-11 edge in the fourth.

     Assistant coach J.C. Nemecek said about the Wolverines, “The team rallied to take the lead 35-34 with four minutes to go. But a strong push by Canyon Ridge was not matched by the Wolverines as the Riverhawks pulled away.”

     Junior Rory Cole (12 points, 4 rebounds) topped Wood River and junior Kenya Schott (9 points, 2 steals) also recorded a season-high in scoring.

     Other contributors were junior Ciceley Peavey (8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists), junior Samantha Sutton (2 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, 1 block), freshman Blair Radford (5 points, 1 assist, 2 steals, 2 blocks) and junior Manuela Cortina-Otero (1 point, 1 rebound, 1 steal).

     Wood River will have another shot at Canyon Ridge during its “Senior Night” Tuesday, Jan. 28 in Hailey.
