Two flood-area businesses are back

DaVinci’s restaurant in Hailey was cleared by structural engineers to open for business Wednesday after a city water main burst in the dawn hours Sunday, causing an icy flood.
Hailey City Administrator Heather Dawson said Thursday that she was expecting the same notice for The Gem Barbershop to be delivered today.
The fate of the Cornerstone building at River and Bullion streets was still undetermined. The basement flooded and the foundation gave way.
DaVinci’s co-owner Larry Schwartz expressed relief that the restaurant was not damaged.
“We were incredibly lucky—our floors are not even wet,” he said.
Business owners said Valley Maintenance has been on the scene throughout the week cleaning up the mess inside and outside.

Land Trust gets East Fork property

The Wood River Land Trust has acquired a donation of the 7.5-acre East Fork Preserve, at the southeast corner of state Highway 75 and East Fork Road. As its owner, the Land Trust will act as steward of the property, allowing a conservation easement held by Blaine County since 2002 to remain in effect.
According to a press release from the Land Trust, the new donation will aid in the protection of lands bordering the Highway 75 corridor, with the conservation of the property’s scenic qualities.
Previously considered as a possible site for low-income housing in 1998, the land was purchased by the East Fork Homeowners Association.
“Because the Land Trust was instrumental in the protection of the property from the beginning stages, we felt they would be the best permanent stewards of its conservation values,” said John Milner, president of the East Fork Preservation Association.

Hailey man charged with rape

A 24-year-old Hailey man has been charged with rape for allegedly committing the crime early Tuesday morning against an adult female.
The criminal complaint against Pedro Morales-Lopez alleges that the woman resisted but was “overcome by force or violence.”
Morales-Lopez was formally charged with the crime at an initial court appearance Wednesday in Blaine County Magistrate Court. According to court records, he pleaded not guilty. He was released from the Blaine County jail later that day after posting $10,000 bond.
In a press release, Hailey Police Chief Jeff Gunter reported that police became involved with the situation at about 4:20 a.m. Tuesday when they were notified of a possible rape victim who was at St. Luke’s Wood River hospital. According to Gunter, the woman said she had been raped at about 2:45 a.m. that day at the suspect’s home on N. Second Street in Hailey.
Police Lt. Steve England said Morales-Lopez was taken into custody without incident at the home shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
