Hailey construction values triple over 2012

More large projects come to city

    Construction activity in the city of Hailey increased three-fold in 2013, adding $12.2 million in assessed values to residential and commercial property.
   In 2012, only $4.7 million in construction projects were undertaken in the city. There were 135 building permits issued in 2013, compared to 177 in 2012.
   Individual permits are issued for a wide range of projects, from low-value fence, roof and garage projects, to high-value remodels and new single-family homes. Therefore, the number of permits is rarely commensurate with the total value.
   For example, 210 permits were issued in 2009, with a construction value of $7.3 million, while in 2010, 206 permits were issued for $13.4 million in construction, the highest construction value recorded during the past five years.
   That year’s dramatic increase was due primarily to construction of the rodeo arena.
   Last year’s boost in construction values included $4.8 million in new single-family homes, $3.5 million in new commercial construction and $2.7 million in commercial remodels.
   These large projects constituted more than 75 percent of all building permits in 2013.

l Former Sustainability Coordinator Mariel Platt will become Hailey’s new public works operations director in March. In her new position, Platt will work in with Public Works Director/City Engineer Tom Hellen. Platt will manage operations, implementing public processes, programs and enhanced communication. The city engineer’s focus will be more on infrastructure planning and development.
