‘Wish You Were Here’

New exhibit surrounding the road trip at The Center

    A road trip is one of those level playing fields that, no matter your locale or your income, one has probably experienced for pleasure or duty.
    In honor of that, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts is hosting a new gallery exhibition called “Wish You Were Here,” at locations both in Ketchum and Hailey from now through Feb. 15.
    “The artwork in the exhibition will offer an entertaining and thought-provoking look at tourism and the American road trip, both past and present,” said Courtney Gilbert, curator of visual arts. “Together these works capture travel in the United States and how, through these excursions, we get to know our nation in a deeper way, reaffirm our identities as American and get to know more about ourselves and our place in the world.”
    The exhibit includes photos from iconic destinations and postcards shared by the public. Artist Cedra Wood was commissioned to create a series of postcard-sized paintings about tourism in Sun Valley. There are special film screenings like “A Room with a View,” Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 6 p.m. at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey.
    The film was produced by Merchant-Ivory in 1985 and stars Helena Bonham Carter, Dame Maggie Smith, Julian Sands and Daniel Day-Lewis. The plot centers on young upper-class English tourists and their quests to see the great sites of Europe. Their travels are also marked by interactions with one another abroad—adventures that continue to influence them once they return to England.

    Two free, guided tours are scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 16, with a lecture by contributing artist Elliott Anderson, and Thursday, Feb. 13, both at 5:30 p.m.
    The public is encouraged to visit one or more of the large-scale postcards stationed throughout the valley, pose with the scene and send it to The Center, which will share them on Facebook and Instagram.
    “The postcards are incredibly fun and adventurous—very fitting celebrations of travel,” said Sarah Kolash, education coordinator. “We know this will be a great activity for all visitors and are excited to see the photos. Two local high school students and videographers, Leo Corrales and Joseph Anderson, will be filming at each location and creating a three-minute film.”
    The postcards are located in Ketchum, at The Center and The Center lot (across from the Ketchum Post Office), at The Center in Hailey, and at the Liberty Theatre. Local artists Keith Joe Dick, Bob Dix, Andrew Ryason, Judy Stoltzfus and Howard Lacina created the life-sized travel scenes.
    Participants will be eligible to win two tickets to the film “National Lampoon’s Family Vacation” at the Magic Lantern Theatre in Ketchum on Thursday, Feb. 13.
