Boy rescued from potentially tragic fall

8-year-old drops 38 feet from chairlift

    An 8-year-old boy was rescued Sunday morning from what could have been a tragic fall from a Bald Mountain chairlift.
   The young skier reportedly fell 38 feet from the Christmas chairlift onto a safety pad put in place by the Sun Valley Ski Patrol. The pad was removed from a nearby lift tower.
   The incident occurred near the lower portion of the Christmas chairlift, which goes from the Roundhouse to the summit of Baldy. According to Bryant Dunn, ski patrol supervisor, it is not clear why the boy slipped from the chair. He said the boy held on to another person sitting in the chair for approximately five minutes before falling.
   “We were able to use some large pads in sort of a fireman’s catch style,” Dunn said.
   Dunn said the lift operators are highly trained in safe loading and on-mountain staff were well equipped to handle the incident, despite its rarity.
   “It was really a matter of quick thinking by our ski patrol,” Dunn said. “We were very well prepared to handle this.”
   Dunn said the boy and his father went skiing on Bald Mountain the next day.
   “We are very happy to hear he came right back after the incident,” Dunn said. “The quick thinking and resourcefulness of the staff on Bald Mountain never ceases to amaze me.”
