BRIEFS

New bike trails approved for Baldy
Ketchum District Ranger Kurt Nelson has signed a decision authorizing Sun Valley Co. to build 11 miles of new summer mountain biking trails on Bald Mountain. Construction is planned for August.  Additional trails are expected to be built over the next four to six years.
“My decision to authorize construction of new mountain biking trails on Bald Mountain is based upon my belief that concentrating new “flow” trail construction within an existing ski area makes both economic and environmental sense,” Nelson said. “Sun Valley Co. has been a good steward of Bald Mountain’s natural resources over the years.”
During a public scoping period this spring, 39 comments were sent to the Forest Service about the trail proposal.  The Forest Service has developed a Response to Comments document that addresses the 20 major themes expressed during the scoping period.
The decision memo, a map of the proposed trails, and the response to comments document are available at www.fs.usda.gov/projects/sawtooth/landmanagement/projects  and at the Ketchum Ranger Station, 206 Sun Valley Rd.
A 45-day appeal period begins with the publication of a legal notice announcing the decision in the Idaho Mountain Express for people and organizations that submitted comments.

Ketchum URA requests land exchange
The Ketchum Urban Renewal agency has released a request for a land exchange for a property at 211 First St. E. for other property within the URA district suitable for the development of affordable housing.
“We have pursued a tax credit application for community housing on this property for the last two years, and have not been successful to date,” said URA Chair Mark Eshman. “We feel this could be a good time to see if the private sector has other properties that could help us achieve our goal of constructing community affordable housing.”
The URA has tried to obtain federal tax credit financing to construct a proposed affordable housing project on the property known as Washington Place. However, after several applications, the Idaho Housing and Finance Association has declined to provide funds for the project.
The URA will be accepting proposals until July 8. The agency has developed a request for proposal that is available at Ketchum City Hall. For more information, contact Lisa Horowitz, Ketchum’s community and economic development director, at 726-7801 or lhorowitz@ketchumidaho.org.
