City moves reuse pump project forward

Facility would save 7k potable gallons per day

The Sun Valley City Council last week unanimously approved an ordinance to facilitate construction of a proposed reuse water-booster pump station that would save about 7,000 gallons of potable water per day during the summer.
The Sun Valley Water and Sewer District would use the station to pump “gray” (used) water to irrigate Sun Valley Co.’s Elkhorn Golf Course, as opposed to using drinking water to do so as is currently the case. The station would be located on a one-third-acre lot just north of the intersection of Lane Ranch Road and Elkhorn Road.
During a meeting Thursday, June 6, the council approved a resolution to amend the Future Land Use map of the city’s 2005 comprehensive plan to change the land-use designation of the lot from Open Space to Public/Quasi-Public. The council also adopted an ordinance to rezone the lot from Outdoor Recreational to Public/Institution.
Sewer District attorney Evan Robertson said at the meeting that time is of the essence and urged the council to take action on the resolution and ordinance as soon as possible. He said a likely savings of about 7,000 gallons of potable water per day during the summer “peak time” is significant and that the district is currently trying to put all the pieces together to begin construction on the facility this year.
“We need this pump,” he said. “We’d like to get after it just as quickly as we can. We want to get as much done this year as we possibly can.”
Though the resolution and the ordinance were approved unanimously, Councilman Nils Ribi voted against waiving three readings of the ordinance, saying residents should have a chance to weigh in on the issue. He said people don’t usually show up to do so until the third reading. The other council members voted to adopt the ordinance that day.
“It’s really of paramount importance that we don’t have an interruption in the potable water system used for drinking and watering lawns [and for fire protection],” Robertson said. “We don’t want to see that burned up.”
