BRIEFS

Ketchum approves first reading of air tax measure
The Ketchum City Council on Monday approved the first of up to three readings of a proposed ordinance to place a “LOT for air service” measure on the November ballot. If passed by 60 percent of the voters, the measure would add an additional 1 percent to the city’s local-option tax to support air service through Friedman Memorial Airport.
A second reading of the ordinance is scheduled for July 1 and a third for July 15.
Hailey, Sun Valley and Ketchum put the same measure on their ballots last year, but Sun Valley’s voters were the only ones to approve it. However, the measure failed only by a few votes in the other two cities.
“A year ago, we were all here in the same seats discussing [the same issue],” said Lisa Horowitz, the city’s community and economic development director. “Unfortunately, the measure did not pass in Ketchum.”
