Feldman paces time trialers at Lake Lowell

Perennial Gem State king tops local golds

Ketchum world champion cyclist Richard Feldman, 44, of Team Durance-Colnago maintained his two-decade mastery of the Idaho State Time Trial Championships with a 96-second men’s victory Saturday on the 30-kilometer (18.6-mile) course at Nampa’s Lake Lowell.
Feldman, Patty Puz and Tom Campion were the Team Durance-Colnago racers earning gold medals Saturday in the USA Cycling-sanctioned state time trial finals that returned to Lake Lowell after a 26-year absence. John Swyers placed second in his class and Jon Engen third for Team Durance.
Silver medalists Kris Thoreson and Gabriele Andersen were the other local medalists in the field of 71 cyclists (40 at 30k, 23 at 20k and 8 at 10k).
Men’s 40-44 class champion Feldman (38:10), a seven-time winner of the Union Cycliste International (UCI) Masters World Time Trial, was the clear overall winner over Sam Krieg (39:46) among the 30k racers Saturday in Canyon County.
Two other local men finished the 30k race.
They were 13th-place Thoreson (43:25), the second-place Men’s 55-59 finisher, and 16th-place Engen (44:18), who was third in the 55-59 group.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Sara Youmans of Ketchum and the Stranamanti Cycling/Keller Rohrback Cycling Team was the top female finisher in the 20k (12.4-mile) Lake Lowell state time trial.
Her time of 30:04 placed Youmans fourth overall of 23 finishers and three-and-a-half minutes faster than the next woman. She competed six days after winning the Women’s Cat. 1/2/3 class in the Central Coast Road Series circuit race June 16 at Monterey, Ca.
    l Other 20k results: 8—Thomas Campion 32:50 (1st 70-plus). 10—John Swyers 33:16 (2nd 70-plus). 20—Gabriele Andersen 38:33 (2nd 65-69, 7th woman). 22—Patty Puz 39:36 (1st 70-plus, 9th woman).
