Great weather makes a splash at Gates golf

Father’s Day tourney is played for the kids

“Best weather ever,” said organizer Roger Roland about the 16th annual Chuck Gates Memorial golf tournament staged Sunday to raise money for junior golf in the valley.
And the turnout wasn’t bad either for the Father’s Day event held in a best-ball scramble format at Sun Valley Golf Course. “A good time was had by all,” said Roland.
There were 23 foursomes and 92 players touring nine holes of the White Cloud Golf Course and nine holes of the Trail Creek Golf Course.
This year’s tournament was dedicated to the memory of Rafer Lutz, a local junior golfer who went on to play in college. Lutz, 42, died May 23, 2012 of melanoma.
Sunday’s tournament raised funds for the Chuck Gates Youth Endowment and Atkinson Park junior golf program.
Endowment president Roland said this year’s tournament raised $5,500. Other board members are Mike Pirzynski, Larry Vallon and Tucker Gates. The Advisory Board includes Alysia May, Bob Dunn and Bill Gehrke.
Tournament proceeds also support the 10th annual Chuck Gates Junior golf tournament scheduled for Friday, June 28 at Bigwood Golf Course.
During the tournament the board members presented a $2,500 check to John Kearney Jr. of the Atkinson Park Recreation Department. Over 13 years the junior golf program has received over $22,500 from Gates tournament proceeds.
This year’s low gross winners in the Chuck Flight at 56 were Dillon Witmer, Ryan Stavros, Barrett Molter and Heather O’Leary.
Winning the Gates Flight with net 56 were Bill Gehrke, John Reinholt, Paul Spitzer and Marcia Rankin.
Long drive winners were Cliff Neely and Alysha Herich.
Closest-to-the-pin winners were Mike Abaid, Louis Mallane, Heather O’Leary and Marcia Rankin.
Karen Morrison won the raffle grand prize. It was a Taylor Made R-1 driver valued at $500.
The tournament is named for Chuck “C” Gates, who died Dec. 6, 1997 in Nevada at the age of 51. A passionate golfer, Gates started Ketchum’s first radio station, KRMR, and was a co-founder of the Idaho Mountain Express newspaper.
