Dr. Robert F. Lindberg

Dr. Robert F. Lindberg died on April 30, 2013, at his home in Ketchum, Idaho. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Patricia Bradley Lindberg; his children, Kristin McCullough (San Jose, Calif.), Kreg Lindberg (Bend, Ore.) and Stig Lindberg (Kailua, Hawaii); his stepchildren, David Lowe (Los Angeles, Calif.) and The Rev. Pamela Dolan (St. Louis, Mo.); their spouses; and his six beloved grandchildren.
Bob was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1934, grew up in Summit, N.J., and graduated from Colgate University and Cornell University Medical College. Bob fulfilled his surgical residency at Dartmouth. As an Army surgeon, he completed his orthopedic training at Tripler Army Medical Center. While in Vietnam, he headed MASH units and when time allowed he volunteered his expertise at orphanages and leprosoriums. His service to his country led him back to Hawaii, his home of nearly 40 years where he was active in numerous professional organizations, including, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Hawaii Orthopedic Association and Lamplighters’ Orthopedic Association.
After practicing medicine in Honolulu’s Straub Clinic & Hospital for 35 years and actively volunteering at Shriner’s Hospital, he and his wife, Patti, retired in 1999 to Sun Valley, Idaho, where they had vacationed for many years. He didn’t retire his love of medicine, however, and soon he was practicing again, this time in Ketchum, until 2009.
Though Bob’s life journey was medicine, his other passions were numerous and varied. Enjoying both the ocean and the mountains, keenly alert to the beauty and power of nature in all its forms, he instilled that fondness in his family. He was always on the move, teaching his children and grandchildren chess, appreciation of classical music, literature, hiking, running, backpacking, sailing, skiing and rollerblading.
While some of his happiest moments were spent singing in choirs, he loved to push himself physically. For such a gentle person, he showed a surprising toughness and enjoyed the most bruising battles on the football field. From elementary school through college, to beach games with the kids, playing football was serious business. Well into his 50s, he would still happily take on men half his age. When his health began to decline, he delighted in learning a new physical discipline from the wonderful horsemen at Swiftsure Ranch.
Despite that devilish twinkle in his blue eyes, he was the epitome of “old school”: kind, polite and, above all, gentlemanly. He will be missed by his family, his many friends and the innumerable patients and colleagues whose lives he touched.
His memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Sun Valley, followed by graveside services at Ketchum Cemetery. Friends are invited to celebrate Bob’s life at the Lindberg home immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Wood River Valley, Swiftsure Ranch Therapeutic Equestrian Center or The Community Library.
