Back in 1983 when the Community School started its boys’ basketball program, one of its first opponents was the independent Twin Falls Christian Academy.

The two schools have played each other in boys’ basketball every year since—and they are usually close, competitive games.

Last Thursday’s meeting at the Fish Tank in Sun Valley was no exception to the rule.

Coach Mike Payne’s Cutthroats from Sun Valley and coach Tyler Schaffer’s Warriors traded leads back-and-forth until the fourth quarter, when Twin Falls Christian (seven 3-pointers) pulled away with 14-for-18 free throw shooting for the 49-34 victory.

The Cutthroats (1-3) went hard to the boards and battled back from a five-point halftime deficit to take a 25-23 lead after three periods. But Cutthroat turnovers (7 in the final period, 20 for the game) took their toll in the fourth and two Warriors stepped up, big time.

Senior Nate Scruggs scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the final eight minutes and junior Hunter Brown (7 rebounds, 7 steals) amassed 9 of his 16 points in the fourth—including 6-for-6 at the line.

Three other key contributors for the Warriors were 6-0 senior board man Brad Rippee (2 points, 14 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists, 1 block), 4-11 freshman sharpshooter Jared Miller (8 points, 2 assists) and junior guard Eric Miller (4 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals).

Senior Reed Roudabush (15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals) mixed it up for the Cutthroats. Sophomore Daniel DuFur (8 points, 4 boards) drilled two 3-pointers sparking his team’s 14-7 third-quarter surge.

Sophomore Garrett Rawlings (6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 6 assists, 1 block) made plenty of things happen to encourage the home crowd.

Others were Taylor Adler (4 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals), Alex Feldman (5 rebounds), Sam Rogers (1 point, 2 boards, 1 assist), Doug DuFur (2 boards, 1 assist) and Keegan Whitelaw (1 rebound, 1 assist).

The Cutthroats resume play Jan. 7 at home against Camas County of Fairfield—the first of five straight home contests. Then they visit Twin Falls Christian Jan. 24.
