University of New Mexico Ski Team freshman Sydney Staples and Peter Martens of the Park City (Utah) Ski Team collected wins in Tuesday’s Eric Hays Memorial giant slalom opener on Payday run at Park City Mountain Resort.
Staples added another GS win Wednesday, while a speedy first run by Hayes Graham, 19, of Park City held off Peter Mar-tens in men’s GS.
There were 27 young alpine racers from the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) in the starting gate of the four-day Intermountain Division Open Series technical races for 172 competitors in U-21 through U-14 age classes.
Staples, 20, a Bountiful (Utah) High School graduate and former Park City Ski Team racer, led both runs and pre-vailed by 1.14 seconds Tuesday over U-16 entrant Juliette Parke, 15, of Rowmark Ski Academy. On Wednesday, 2010 national junior super combined champion Staples finished .90 seconds ahead of double GS runner-up Parke
Martens, 18, formerly from the National Sports Academy and now at Park City with his twin brother Colin Martens, was a 1.27-second winner over Rowmark’s James Cleason Tuesday. Actually, Colin Mar-tens roared down the 53-gate course to post the fastest sec-ond-run time and move all the way from 22nd to 8th.
SVSEF U-16 Will Snyder was fourth of 56 competitors in his class, finishing 19th overall of 77 two-run male racer. SVSEF U-14s Charlie Stumph (51st overall), Jake Blackburn (59th) and Matt O’Connor (63rd) placed 2-4-6 among U-14s.
Katelyn Rathfon, a SVSEF U-16 racer, was 13th overall of 61 two-run women and eighth in her class. SVSEF U-14 Molly Milgard (27th overall) was fourth among U-14s.
Wednesday, 13-year-old Molly Milgard climbed the lad-der to 15th overall of 51 two-run GS finishers and finished fourth again among U-14s. Ava Mazzoni (10-U16) placed 19th. Sun Valley’s John Garrett, 15, finished a strong fourth among the U-14 boys and 28th overall.
Slaloms were scheduled for Thursday and Friday on Pay-day to wrap up the series.
Other Sun Valley racers were in action this week on hills in Colorado and Canada.
- Comeback racer Hailey Duke placed second overall Tuesday and Wednesday in MacDermid FIS Nor-Am Cup slalom races at Vail, Colo.
- U-21 racer KJ Savaria, 18, placed fourth overall just .77 seconds back in Wednesday’s Keurig FIS Series super giant slalom at Panorama Mountain Village, Alberta, Canada.
