High school basketball players from the Community School and Carey High School had a busy week of games and are looking to close out their pre-Christmas schedule of games by Friday, Dec. 20.
Cutthroat boys win at Bliss
Coach Mike Payne’s Community School Cutthroats (1-2) drilled 10 3-pointers during Thursday’s 60-37 win at Bliss. Five of them came from Doug DuFur (18 points). Top scorer Taylor Adler (16.7 ppg) led the way with 20 points, Reed Roudabush added 10, Garrett Rawlings 5 and Keegan Whitelaw 4 for the Cutthroats.
On Monday, the Cutthroats battled to come back from a seven-point halftime deficit but fell short 54-52 at Murtaugh. Doug DuFur just missed a contested 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have won it. Rawlings just missed a put-back that would have sent the outcome into overtime.
Payne said, “It was a well fought game by the Cutthroats.” Adler finished with 18 points, Rawlings 10, Roudabush 9 and DuFur 8.
Last Tuesday, the Cutthroat boys produced five 3-pointers at Fairfield. But the host Camas County Mushers (1-3) enjoyed a wide 16-4 scoring advantage at the free throw line and carried away their first victory of the young season by a 47-39 score after building a 19-12 halftime edge.
Sophomore guard Daniel DuFur (9 points) nailed three 3-pointers, while Adler (12 points) led the way for the Cutthroats. Rawlings tossed in 7 points, Doug DuFur 5, Alex Feldman 4 and Roudabush 2. Isaac Simon’s 17 points topped the Mushers.
The Cutthroats host Twin Falls Christian Academy Thursday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Fish Tank. The Warriors nipped Camas County 51-38 last Thursday in Twin Falls.
Carey boys drop home games to Valley, Oakley
Coach Dick Simpson’s Carey High School boys (2-2) continued their challenging stretch of early-season games with 48-43 (OT) and 57-40 home losses to unbeaten Valley of Hazelton (4-0) and Oakley (4-0) last Thursday and Friday.
Thursday, 1A Division 2 Carey rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to tie 2A Valley 38-38 after regulation time. Nate Adamson (15 points) and Joe Parke (15 points, 12 rebounds) led Carey and Matt Whitworth had 6.
Oakley, another 2A school, outscored Carey 33-21 in the second half for its 17-point road triumph on Friday. Adamson finished with 17 points, Parke 8 and Whitworth 7 before all three fouled out for Carey (out-pointed 20-10 at the free throw line).
Carey visited Butte County Tuesday and hosts Shoshone (3-2) Thursday, Dec. 19. Both are 1A Div. 1 schools. Led by the scoring of Edward Anguiano, Shoshone (3-2) nipped Hagerman 66-61 at home before falling 51-46 at Valley last week. Shoshone visits Richfield today, Wednesday.
For the Carey girls, 5-7 sophomore Medin Cenarrusa had the hot hand with 19 points in each of two Panther losses—40-31 at home to Oakley Friday, and 71-39 at Challis (7-2) on Saturday. Carey fell to 1-6 on the season.
At Challis, the Panthers also got scoring from Paige Koudelka 8 points, Lilly Rivera 6 points and Hailee Johnson 4. Vikings’ star Tara Chamberlain finished with 16 points, 11 boards and 8 steals.
Coach Merrilee Sears’ Carey girls host Shoshone Thursday and wrap up their pre-holiday slate at Castleford on Friday, Dec. 20.
Bailey unbeaten at Bucks Bags dual wrestling
Wood River High School senior Cooper Bailey went 6-0 and was undefeated in the 132-pound weight class of the Bucks Bags dual wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday at Boise’s Capital High.
Although Wood River entered only three wrestlers, they posted an 11-5 record at the two-day tournament led by Bailey (7-0 season). Ryan Anderson (4-2 season) went 3-2 at 120 pounds and Colby Castle (3-3) was 2-3 at 98 pounds.
Head coach Shawn Huntington said about his wrestlers the season’s first tournament, “I was really proud of their effort and I was pleased with their performance.”
The three, plus Kaleb Guisasola, Kyle Clark and Taylor Douthit, are Wood River’s six varsity wrestlers. JV wrestlers are Everett Thomas, Irvin Gonzalez, Riley Beck, Aramys Gallegos, Jorge Vallejo, Cameron Bingham, Hans Heaphy, Gaje Moats, Ben Romero and Alvaro Hurtado.
Bailey, Anderson win on first night
Cooper Bailey and Ryan Anderson pinned their Kimberly opponents last Tuesday as the Wolverines debuted their season with a dual meet on the Hailey mat.
Reigning district 106-pound champ Anderson pinned Kimberly’s Josiah Schroeder at 3:12 in the 120-pound match. Three-time state qualifier Bailey needed only 17 seconds to pin Kylar Prescott at 132.
Kimberly won 48-36 as nine out of 14 weight classes were forfeits—four won by Wood River and five won by Kimberly—plus a double forfeit at 220. Wolverine forfeit winners were Colby Castle at 98, Everett Thomas at 106, Cameron Bingham at 152 and Alvaro Hurtado at 285.
The Wolverines hosted Minico Tuesday for a home dual meet. A second big tournament, the Bear Cat varsity and JV meet, arrives Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20-21 at Twin Falls and Jerome high school gyms.
