Alpine racers in action at Snowbird, Copper

FIS season opens on two hills


     There were podium positions aplenty for Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation alpine ski racers during the Snowbird (Utah) Intermountain Division FIS Classification race series Dec. 12-15.

     Earning first places in their classes were Samantha Busby (U18 giant slalom), Jordan Fitzgerald (U18 slalom) and Haley Cutler (U18 GS). Mackenzie Bachmeier climbed the podium all four days in U21, followed closely by Linnea Baysinger (second in U21 GS).

     Marc Leroux (U18 GS) and Stockton Troyer (U18 SL) also were among the class leaders. Former SVSEF racer Teagen Palmer (Univ. of Utah) placed second in Saturday’s slalom.

     There were 19 SVSEF racers in the field of 50 men and 20 women who wrapped up their technical racing Saturday and Sunday with slalom races.

     At Copper Mountain, Co., SVSEF Gold Teamer Kipling Weisel, 18, placed 23rd of 96 finishers Thursday in an FIS Nor-Am Cup men’s downhill.

     Weisel (7-U21) was 1.82 seconds off the winning time. Tanner Farrow, 20, placed 46th (21-U21), 3.13 seconds back.

     Farrow, who ended up 26th in super combined (10-U21), placed 31st of 109 racers (9-U21) in Saturday’s super giant slalom. Weisel was 51st (24-U21). In Friday’s SG, Farrow was 40th (17-U21) and KJ Savaria 60th (28-U21). Savaria, 18, was 43rd in combined (19-U21).

     Kyla Miller of the SVSEF placed 32nd (12-U18) in Thursday’s women’s DH at Copper.
