Motorists to get a break from road construction

ITD reports work will be suspended for Fourth of July holiday

Motorists will get a break from road construction south of Ketchum for the Fourth of July holiday. The Idaho Transportation Department announced Thursday that work on state Highway 75 will be suspended from July 3-5.
    The work is being performed by Idaho Sand & Gravel Co., of Jerome, to widen a 3.25-mile section of the highway between Timber Way just north of East Fork Road and the bridge over the Big Wood River near St. Luke’s Wood River hospital. The work is expected to last throughout the summer and fall and possibly into the spring of 2014.
    ITD reported in a construction update Thursday that utility relocation is still being done in several areas of the construction zone and that utility work will continue throughout the project as necessary.
    Removal of structures, including the former Dean Tire building south of Ketchum, was started this week. Removal of the buildings was necessary because they were within the path of the highway expansion. Some hazardous materials will have to be removed from the building sites, ITD said.
    Road-base construction is also under way at several locations between Broadway Run and Hospital Drive to prepare for paving a temporary roadway. Paving is expected to start the week of June 24. ITD reported that traffic will be shifted onto the temporary lanes before the July Fourth holiday.
    Placement of new signal poles and mast arms continues at the Hospital Drive intersection. ITD stated that an operational traffic signal will be maintained throughout construction.
    Also under way is construction of a rock retaining wall near the River’s Edge subdivision. That work is expected to last about two weeks.
    ITD reported that Stage 2 construction activities will begin about July 8. Stage 2 involves construction of the southbound lanes and shoulder work. At that time, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction throughout the entire work zone and a maximum 45-mile-per hour speed limit will go into effect. The speed limit will be 35 miles per hour in some areas.
    Stage 2 work includes construction of the southbound lanes complete with drainage facilities, a noise wall at the Drashner Trailer Park and a pile wall at the rock outcrop near Owl Rock Road.
