Valley Club pro wins holiday tennis title

155 players at Sun Valley Tennis

Valley Club assistant tennis professional Brett Van Linge waltzed to the Men’s Open Singles championship of the Lyle Pearson 4th of July Tennis Championships Sunday at Sun Valley Tennis Club.
Linge, 29, a product of Irvine Woodbridge High School and Cal Poly, hailing now from San Luis Obispo, Ca., dropped only 12 games in winning four straight-set matches to place first in the 20-player top-flight class.
He defeated Josh Goodwin of Pocatello 6-0, 6-1 in Sunday’s championship match that wrapped up a three-day holiday event sponsored by Atkinsons’ Market, Sun Valley Resort and Lyle Pearson Motors of Boise.
Goodwin, a recent Century High School graduate, won three Idaho State 4A boys’ singles championships in his four-year high school career—losing only to Ketchum’s Karl Wilander in a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 semi-final of the 2012 high school tournament won by Wood River’s Wilander.
Van Linge also teamed with fellow Valley Club assistant tennis pro Jake Davis of Layton, Utah to win Men’s Open Doubles title 7-5, 6-3 over defending 4th of July champs Anthony Hunt of Boise and Tyler Neill of Pocatello.
Tournament director John Perry said there were 155 players in 247 events. There were 18 classes—eight men’s classes, six women’s categories and four in mixed.
Open Mixed Doubles winners in the round robin were Kevin Conner and Sydney Conner of Boise. Sydney Conner also claimed the Women’s Open Singles championship in the round-robin format for that class.
Among local players, Barbara Figge and Kris Miller won the Women’s 4.5 doubles championship with three victories. Figge and Miller added the Women’s 4.0 Doubles title with four match wins including a tough 6-7, 6-1, 10-7 quarterfinal win over Amanda Alexander of Sun Valley and Darlene Miller of Star.
