Chelsea Holmes is SVSEF top weekly athlete

Bohart Ranch classic race winner

Cross-country ski racer Chelsea Holmes garnered the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's Athlete of the Week award, SVSEF communications director Jody Zarkos announced on Wednesday.

The new weekly award is voted upon by the organization's program directors.

Holmes clocked a first-place performance in a USSA SuperTour 10-kilometer classic race last weekend at Bohart Ranch in Bozeman, Montana.

“That is the best classic result she has ever had,” Rick Kapala, SVSEF cross country program director said. “Her race was so solid. She beat the field by 43 seconds.”

In a mass start format, Holmes, 26, built an immediate lead and maintained it over the field of 17 finishers, to win in 34:23.

Kapala said Holmes, a two-time Canadian national champion (5k/30k), has been working hard at honing her classic technique and the results are tangible.

“She has worked so hard on her classic technique in the last year and it showed,” Kapala said.

The victory marked Holmes fourth SuperTour win and was the second time she has stepped on top of the podium at Bohart Ranch. In addition to four gold medals, Holmes has posted 13 top-five results, including six podiums, in SuperTour events.

The SuperTour is a season-long series of races that take place across North America. The leaders of the SuperTour earn FIS World Cup start rights. The series culminates with the SuperTour Finals March 23-29 in Anchorage, Alaska.
