Rotarun ski area set to open Dec. 21

Opening day will feature free breakfast, book signing

    With a little help from Mother Nature, the Rotarun community ski area west of Hailey will open for the season on Saturday, Dec 21.
   Opening day will feature a pancake breakfast, ski-chair raffle and a book signing by Margaret Fuller, author of “Ski the Great Potato: Idaho Ski Areas: Past and Present.”
   Rotarun—located three miles west of Hailey on Croy Creek Road—was founded nearly 70 years ago. The ski area features night skiing but has no snowmaking equipment, so its season fluctuates from year to year.
   The free breakfast is courtesy of Atkinsons’ Market. Pancakes will be served from 9 a.m. until noon.
   Fuller has written several hiking guides for the Sawtooth Mountains, White Cloud Mountains, Hells Canyon and other Idaho wilderness areas. She and her son, Doug Fuller, will be available to sign “Ski the Great Potato,” which explores the history of the 21 ski areas that are still running in Idaho, and the 72 historical, or “lost ones,” that are no longer in operation.
   “The book gives the basic facts about each area and how it started. And it includes little stories of some of the people who skied at each one,” said Rotarun spokesperson Joan Davies.
   “This book is unique, and a work to treasure for anyone interested in the heritage of Idaho ski resorts, mountains and hills,” wrote Olympic skier Picabo Street in a review of the book.
   The books are being donated. Proceeds from sales will go to support programs at Rotarun.
   Raffle tickets will be on sale to win a ski chair painted by Hailey artist Melissa Graves Brown.
