Hot half helps Carey boys beat Hagerman 59-47

Whitworth, Adamson lead Panthers to win

     Carey High School junior-class basketball players Nate Adamson and Matt Whitworth played together like a hand and a well-fitting glove in the first half of Friday’s non-conference home game against 1A Division 1 Hagerman.

     Adamson, finding Whitworth on the baseline with no-look passes, scored 10 points in the first half and Whitworth added 15 lifting Carey into a 33-18 halftime lead over a Hagerman squad that had scored 71 points in a 71-55 home win over Castleford just two nights before.

     “Nate and Matt play well together,” said Carey coach Dick Simpson after an unusual early-season contest during which the Panthers shot 55% from the field and 29% (8-for-27) from the free throw line.

     Although Hagerman sliced Carey’s once-huge 17-point lead to 11 points several times in the second half, coach Kevin Cato’s Pirates never got any closer despite the ice-cold Panther charity shooting (6-for-21 fourth quarter).

     Carey (2-0) won its second game by a double-digit margin 59-47 and Hagerman (2-1) settled for its first loss after its 16-point home victory over Castleford and season-opening 29-point home triumph over Lighthouse Christian Academy Dec. 3.

     Whitworth enjoyed his second double-double of the young season (22 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists, 1 block). Others were Adamson (19 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals, 1 block) and foul-plagued sophomore Joe Parke (9 points, 5 boards, 1 block).

     Carey out-rebounded Hagerman 40-23.

     It was the first loss for several of the Hagerman Pirates who went 13-0 with a 58.6 ppg scoring average in football this fall for the school’s second State 1A Division 1 eight-man football title in three years. The Pirate seniors went 34-1 over three football seasons, outscoring foes by an average score of 54-15.

     Kade Kress, Hagerman senior and the leader of those high-achieving teams, finished Friday’s game with 19 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists. He had 27 in the win over Castleford Wednesday.

     Other Carey contributors were Dallin Dilworth (3 points, 4 rebounds), Derrick Baird (2 points, 6 boards), Chris Peck (1 point, 3 rebounds, 5 assists), Luis Garcia (2 rebounds) and Corban Johnson (3-pointer).

     Baird did particularly well on the boards in the absence of Parke, who fouled out.

     Marcus Emerson, one of six seniors on Hagerman compared to Carey’s one, added 11 points and 9 rebounds. Clint Clifford had 10 points.

     Carey stays home and goes up against two other bigger schools with unbeaten records when Valley of Hazelton (2-0) arrives Thursday, Dec. 12 and the Oakley Hornets (2-0) come to town Friday, Dec. 13.

     Valley won a pair of close games over Hansen and Raft River, while Oakley blew out Murtaugh and Hansen by 29 and 30 points.
