Ski Club plans busy winter with Baldy Cup

Reunion Week is earlier this winter

The Sun Valley Ski Club is again hosting the Baldy Cup Race Series featuring giant slalom and slalom races for all ages and levels.

On the 11-race slate for 2014 are Intermountain Masters’ Skoch Cup in January, the multi-tasking Leif’s Race in February, and the new Super Hero GS. You can participate in one or all of the races.

Prizes are awarded at each race with age group brackets and for the overall Baldy Cup. World Cup-style scoring is used to determine the leaders.  Last year Erika Hogan and Miles Fink-Debray took home Baldy Cup honors as well as sizable cash prizes.

Many of the races are scheduled on weekends, providing increased racing opportunities for recreational racers and families.

The Series kicks off Thursday, Dec. 19 with Club
Slalom and finishes in mid-March with the two-day Sun Valley Ski Club Championships.

Interestingly, the Sun Valley Ski Club Reunion Week has moved up a month in the winter schedule. The 48th annual gathering is set for Sunday through Friday, Jan. 5-10 at Sun Valley Resort.

     The Baldy Cup schedule is:

Thursday, Dec. 19: Club slalom, 1:30 p.m. start, registration from 12 noon-1 p.m. at Warm Springs Lodge.

Sunday, Jan.  5: Club slalom, 10 a.m. start, registration 8:30-9:30am.

Tuesday, Jan. 7: Bradford Cup GS, a Ski Club tradition and racing highlight for SVSC Reunion Week, Free for Sun Valley Ski Club members, registration from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at Warm Springs Lodge.

Friday through Sunday, Jan. 17-19: Skoch Cup SG, GS, and SL, Sun Valley’s stop on 2014 Intermountain Masters Race Series tour. This is the only Baldy Cup series race limited to 18-and-older racers. Pre-registration and schedule at skiracereg.com.

Saturday, Feb. 8: Leif’s Race combined GS and Nordic, a Sun Valley tradition since 1992.

     Sunday, Feb. 16: Club GS.

Sunday, March 2: Super Hero GS, for all caped crusaders. Time incentives and prizes for best costumes and feats of daring.

Saturday and Sunday, March 15-16:               Club Championship SL and GS.

To increase appeal for casual and new racers, racing suits are discouraged for all races except the Skoch Cup and the Club Championships.

On the wilder and crazier side of Sun Valley Ski Club racing, costumes are encouraged, if not mandatory, for Leif’s Race and the newly debuting Super Hero GS.

Registration fees are discounted for Sun Valley Ski Club members and kids under 12. For more information on SVSC Membership or race scoring, registration fees, and race times/locations visit sunvalleyski.com.
