Sun Valley Resort this week reported a successful start to the 2013-14 winter ski and snowboard season.
“We had very good attendance numbers, which were about what we expected and predicted,” said Jack Sibbach, the resort’s marketing and public relations director. “More importantly, I think everyone had a great time and the guests really enjoyed themselves.”
The resort kicked off the ski season on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28. According to Sibbach, more than 2,000 people went skiing and snowboarding from Thursday to Saturday. He said there was a large drop-off in guests due to poor weather on Sunday, but the great weather from beforehand made for a solid opening on Bald and Dollar mountains.
Sibbach said there were two nights last weekend during which more than 300 rooms were booked at the resort. There were more than 800 people in attendance at the Limelight Room of the Sun Valley Inn for the resort’s Thanksgiving buffet, he said.
Occupancy at hotels in the Sun Valley resort area was estimated at 55 percent for the holiday weekend. In Hailey, hotel occupancy was estimated at 25 percent.
Over the holiday weekend, Sun Valley offered top-to-bottom skiing on the River Run side of Bald Mountain and on limited terrain on Dollar Mountain.
In order to open up more portions of Baldy and Dollar, Sibbach said the resort will continue to make snow when temperatures permit.
“The snowmaking is done not only to get the season started, but to also keep the quality of the product,” he said. “We’ll continue to run it during the season to spruce up some areas.”
About 5 inches of fresh snow fell on Bald Mountain during a winter storm that passed through central Idaho on Monday.
Skiers and boarders can check updated mountain reports for current conditions and possible expanded terrain by calling (800) 635-4150 or visiting www.sunvalley.com.
