Youngsters can learn to ski, board or skate

Various camps, clinics and lessons available in Sun Valley area

Opportunities are available in the Sun Valley area for youngsters to learn how to ski, board and skate. These kids are participating in the Sun Valley Ski & Snowboard School at Dollar Mountain.

    Youngsters can perfect their skiing, boarding or skating skills this winter through camps, clinics or lessons held by Sun Valley Resort, the Blaine County Recreation District, Hailey Ice or the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club.
Nordic skiing
    The Recreation District offers after-school Youth Nordic Skiing lessons for second- through fifth-graders at the Croy Nordic groomed trail system west of Hailey. A mandatory introduction session, with parents or guardians in attendance, is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 15, at the Recreation District office at the Community Campus in Hailey. The time is to be announced later.
    Skiing runs from 3-4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from Jan. 22 through Feb. 19. The fee is $85 and does not include skis or equipment. Transportation will be provided by school bus. Downhill skiing and boarding
    Sun Valley Resort offers skiing and snowboarding clinics for children of all ages.
    The Sun Valley-Wood River FreeRide Team is available for youngsters age 6 through high school and offers non-competitive training for skiers and snowboarders. The 13-week program, held on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., starts on Saturday, Dec. 7. The cost is $450.
    The She Shreds clinic is for intermediate to advanced girl skiers age 6-18. The program starts on Dec. 7 and runs for 13 weeks. Sessions are held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $450.
    The Spuds Snowsports Camp is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Two five-week sessions are available, with the first starting on Saturday, Jan. 4, and the second on Saturday, Jan. 22. Lessons are offered in both the morning and afternoon, with the morning session starting at 9 a.m. and the afternoon session starting at 12:30. The cost is $140 but does not include a lift ticket, available for $42. Sessions will be held at both Baldy and Dollar.
    Younger children can sign up for the Little Spuds camp for ages 3-5. Four sessions, at $175 each, will be held beginning on Dec. 3, Jan. 7, Jan. 28 and Feb. 25. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m. for three weeks.

Ice Skating
    Hailey Ice will offer several programs for youngsters in both figure skating and ice hockey. Programs will include Learn to Skate classes, Boys Hockey Grades K-5, Girls Hockey Grades K-5 and Beginner Figure Skating Grades 1-5. Schedules and prices were not available at press deadline, but Hailey Ice Executive Director Sarah Benson said the information will be available by the end of the month.     The Sun Valley Figure Skating Club has “Skate with Us” classes for both the beginner and the more advanced skater. Winter/spring sessions run from Jan. 31 to April 11 and are held on Friday afternoons.
    There’s a Snow Sam One to Three level session for preschool children and a Basic One to Eight level to teach fundamentals. A Basic Skills Free Skate One to Six is available for more advanced figure skaters that have mastered basic skills.
    Classes are held on the Sun Valley Resort outdoor ice rink.
