Fundraiser to help skier get to Sochi

Former U.S. slalom racer is tumor-free

    Hailey Duke lost her spot on the U.S. Ski Team last year after undergoing surgery to have a benign tumor removed from her brain. The slalom skier is now in Europe vying for a shot at the winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, in February.
   “I’ve run into a lot of roadblocks, but it’s about me not giving up,” the former Hailey resident said in an article in The Washington Post on Nov. 9. This week, she’s competing in Finland at her first Europa Cup race.
   “If I didn’t take this chance, I would regret it for the rest of my life,” she said.
   The SQN Design Studio, above Friesen Gallery in Ketchum, will host a fundraising event during Gallery Walk on Friday night to help pay for Duke’s travel expenses leading up to the Olympic Team selection in January.
   “We’re going to be selling our clothes and donating 25 percent of the sales directly to Hailey to help her get to Sochi,” said Megan Lengyel, whose company designs active wear for women.
   Duke took 30th place in slalom at the 2010 Winter Games. She had a tumor near her pituitary gland removed on Feb. 5.
   “Almost immediately, she felt better,” the Post article stated. “So much so that she’s chasing an Olympic spot on the U.S. team, even paying for expenses out of her own pocket.”
   Duke learned to ski on Dollar Mountain. Both her parents taught skiing for Sun Valley Resort.
