Baldy, Dollar set to open Thursday

Resort to offer top-to-bottom skiing and boarding

   Sun Valley Co. announced late Monday that portions of both Bald and Dollar mountains will be open for skiers and snowboarders on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28.
   A statement from Sun Valley Co. said, “Thanks to early-season natural snow and colder temperatures for an abundance of snowmaking, Sun Valley Resort will open Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, with four high-speed quads and two magic carpets for youngsters.”
    The lifts will service 11 ski runs and a progressive park on Bald and Dollar mountains, resort officials said. Runs open for skiing and snowboarding on Baldy will include Upper College, Lower College, Sunset Strip, 42nd St., Roundhouse Slope, Lower Canyon, Mid River Run and Lower River Run. Effectively, that allows people to ski or snowboard from the summit to the base.
    The terrain will be serviced by the River Run No. 1, Lookout Express No. 5 and Christmas No. 3 lifts, along with the Kinderspielplatz tow lift for kids at the base of the mountain.
   On Dollar Mountain—where snowmaking has been very effective—the high-speed Quarter Dollar lift and the Accelerator Carpet lift for beginners are scheduled to open. Open runs include Poverty Flats, Quarter Dollar Bowl and a progressive park. Dollar Mountain will continue its daily operation through Sunday, Dec. 1, and then will close until its re-opening on Dec. 14.
   The open lodges for the start of the season will be the River Run Lodge at the base of Baldy and the Lookout restaurant at the summit. Carol’s Dollar Mountain Lodge will be open on Dollar through Dec. 1.
Resort officials said that because snow conditions can change, skiers and boarders should check updated mountain reports for current conditions and possible expanded terrain by calling (800) 635-4150 or by visiting www.sunvalley.com.
