Panthers open season with loss

Carey loses to Challis, 58-37

By JON MENTZER

The Carey lady Panthers opened the 2013-14 basketball season at home against Challis Tuesday night, and it wasn't an easy opening night as Challis came away victorious 58-37.

Challis outscored Carey (0-1, 0-0) 39-18 in the first three quarters, but the Panthers battled back courageously in the fourth quarter. However, it wasn’t enough.

“There were some bright moments,” Merrilee Sears, head coach of the Panthers said. “I also saw some things we need to work on. This is November not February. This is one game out of 18, we’ll get better every day. It will come.”

The Panthers were led by sophomore Medin Cenarrusa's game-high 15 points; however, Carey couldn't keep up with Challis for most of the night.

“I thought (Medin) did a good job penetrating and getting some good shots,” said Sears. “I’m happy for her; I didn’t know she had that many points. We didn’t hit many outside shots.”

Junior Natalie Villanueva added eight points for the Panthers and senior Lilly Rivera added four points on the night.

Sears said that her Panthers need to take care of the ball as Challis pressed Carey fairly well all night.

“We didn’t handle the pressure well,” added Sears. “We’re still very young so it’ll take some time to fill out their holes. They’ll get it.”

Carey was on the road Thursday night as the team traveled to Oakley.
