Hailey Turkey Trot celebrates 10 years

Local 5K road race kicks off holiday season

By JON MENTZER

The Hailey Turkey Trot is back for its 10th anniversary when the 5K race begins on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28.

Last year, the community race attracted 600 compeitors, which is a course record. Ben Stout won the race last year with a time of 17:06, which is also a course record. Chase England came in second overall (tops in 17-and-under) with a time of 17:16. Ryan Yates came in third place with a time of 17:57.

Pedro Morales (2011 race winner) had a solid time last year of 18:15.

The top women finishers last year were Tiffany Larson with a time of 20:38, Angenie McCleary at 21:04, and both Julie Siegel and Jennifer Schwartz tied with a time of 23:00.

The Hailey Turkey Trot benefits the Souper Supper and Girls on the Run.

“It’s a captive audience at 10 a.m.,” said Daryl Fauth, who started the 5K race. “Most people have the turkey in the oven, and football hasn’t started yet. It’s just really low-key fun. People run, walk, they bring their dogs. It’s really a pretty course and it hits everyone’s schedule.”

Thanksgiving Day is also when Baldy opens for skiing, but numbers in the race are expected to be strong. However, with Thanksgiving a week later than last year, runners might be running in the snow.

“It’s friendly and a social gathering,” said Fauth. “It really gets everyone in the holiday mood.”

So far, Fauth said between 50-100 racers have already signed up.

The race begins at 10 a.m. at Sturtos in Hailey, where the start and finish line are. Runners can register online or on race day.
