Recycling site OK’d

YMCA facility expected to become operational early next year

    The Ketchum City Council on Monday unanimously approved the placement of a glass and cardboard recycling facility at the Wood River YMCA on Saddle Road.
More than a dozen fifth-grade students from Hemingway Elementary School were in attendance at the council meeting, as the school’s recycling club examined five different locations before recommending the YMCA parking lot as the best site to have a new recycling facility.
   City Planning Manager Joyce Allgaier also recommended the site, as she stressed the need for the city to improve its glass recycling options.
   “This will advance our community, and make it a more sustainable place,” Allgaier said. “We need a new location for glass recycling, and I am so happy Hemingway’s recycling club took the responsibility and helped us find a location.”
The Hemingway recycling club began work on its efforts to find a new recycling site during the second week of school. During a PowerPoint presentation, each student shared the pros and cons of all sites under consideration, which included one on Lewis Street, at the Pump Park, at the Post Office and at city parking lot on Second Street.
    In the summer of 2013, public glass-recycling containers were removed from the city’s recycling drop-off location at a Fourth Street parking lot. The decision came in the wake of numerous complaints from neighbors bemoaning the noise that the glass-collection operation generated. In response, Hemingway technology teacher Scott Slonim and the fifth-grade recycling club volunteered to assist in pursuing improved recycling options in Ketchum.
   The glass and cardboard that goes through the YMCA facility will be sent to the Ohio Gulch waste and recycling station. Glass is being processed and held at the site but is currently not being sold for reuse.
   In a memo to the City Council, Allgaier said that no additional financial support will be necessary for the site, and the city will not incur any costs as a result of the relocation of recycling containers. Wood River YMCA Executive Director Jason Fry said he supports the use of the parking lot for glass recycling.
   Community and Economic Development Director Lisa Horowitz said the site should begin processing glass in early 2014.
