Sun Valley hires new assistant fire chief

Charles Butterfield

The city of Sun Valley has hired Wood River Fire & Rescue firefighter Charles Butterfield as its new assistant fire chief. He will begin his duties on Dec. 1.
Butterfield previously worked for the Sun Valley Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1995, and eventually worked his way up to a captain position in the department. He left the department in 2002 to pursue paramedic school, and in recent years has worked as a full-time firefighter for Wood River Fire & Rescue.
“It’s good to be back with the Sun Valley Fire Department,” Butterfield said. “Having got my start in working up the Sun Valley Fire Department, leaving to get experience and education, it now feels like I’ve come full circle.”
Butterfield will fill the position with a substantial educational background in addition to his firefighting and paramedic experience. He earned an associate’s degree in fire service from the College of Southern Idaho, a bachelor’s degree in fire service administration from Colorado State University and a master’s degree in education from Colorado State.
Sun Valley Mayor Dewayne Briscoe said seven candidates were interviewed over the course of two weeks, and he was very impressed by and pleased to hire Butterfield.
“His academic preparation to be a fire chief was impressive,” Briscoe said. “But what really stood out to me was his demeanor and the way he handles himself, which I think will really appeal to Sun Valley citizens.”
Briscoe said Butterfield’s certifications as a firefighter and a paramedic, along with his focus on cross-training between the fire and paramedic departments, fits the mold of the candidate he sought for the position.
When Butterfield previously worked for the Sun Valley Fire Department, he served as a captain alongside Ray Franco, who is now the chief of the department. Butterfield has also taught emergency medical classes to people he will be working with in the department.
Butterfield said is very excited to get started.
“I just want to get a feel for the department,” Butterfield said. “I look forward to bringing my experience and interjecting my expertise to move the department forward in a real positive direction.”
