Randy Hall served well over eight years

Eight years ago, I campaigned to elect Randy Hall as Ketchum’s mayor. Four years later, I again supported his candidacy.
Recently, though, I joined a large majority of voters in electing the mayor’s opponent. Nevertheless, my sense is that Ketchum can feel very good about Hall’s two terms of leadership. Choosing a new mayor when the status quo is relatively positive was probably somewhat uncomfortable for many voters.
Yet, change in our world is accelerating, and eight years in today’s environment is a long time. Randy Hall may have summed up the election’s result best when he surmised that Ketchum voters wanted “a cultural change.” (Imagine a popular software package going more than eight years without a major update.)
Mayor-elect Nina Jonas received overwhelming support. Yet, her win also includes the difficult task of leading Ketchum; Hall’s experience won’t be easily replaced. Thus, although I predict that Jonas will “hit the ground running” in January, I also expect that she will occasionally stumble. Voters should be patient. Finally, I hope that voters appreciate outgoing mayor Hall for doing a difficult job well. Thank you, Randy!
