Ketchum woman released from hospital

Elmore County deputy provides information on head-on crash

    A Ketchum woman was released Friday from a Boise hospital where she was taken by emergency helicopter after being injured in a head-on collision Tuesday, Nov. 5, on U.S. Highway 20 northeast of Mountain Home.
   Stephanie Olson, 42, the co-owner of Velocio Café in Ketchum, was initially transported by ground ambulance to Mountain Home and then flown from there to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.
   The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday that the accident occurred in “terrible” road conditions shortly before 9:30 p.m. about 29 miles northeast of Mountain Home near the bottom of Cat Creek Summit.
   Deputy Shaun Sterling said Olson was eastbound in a 2009 Mini Cooper when her vehicle was struck head-on by a westbound 1995 Chevrolet 2500 four-wheel-drive pickup driven by Gregory A. Thiel, 50, of Boise. Sterling said Thiel, driving about 45 miles per hour, lost control of his vehicle on a curve.
   Sterling said both drivers were wearing seatbelts and that the airbag deployed on Olson’s vehicle. He said Thiel suffered a lip injury when his head struck the steering wheel, but was not transported. He said Olson’s dog died in the crash.
   Sterling attributed the accident to road conditions.
   “It was snowing pretty heavy up there,” Sterling said. “The roads were terrible.”
