Panel to discuss education goals

Public invited to learn about Idaho Core Standards

    The public is invited to a panel discussion on Tuesday, Nov. 19, to learn about Idaho Core Standards, a new approach to K-12 education intended to bring more rigor to studies and to help students develop critical thinking and a deeper understanding in math and English language arts.
   The Blaine County School District and The Community Library in Ketchum are hosting the discussion. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. at The Community Library. Panelists will include local leaders in business, higher education and K-12 education.
   Idaho Core Standards are based on a Common Core Standards Initiative that has been adopted by Idaho and 44 other states. The purpose of the initiative is to establish a nationwide set of educational standards. Currently, standards vary from state to state.
   Typically, the new standards will raise the learning bar and help high school graduates be better prepared to achieve in college and to become more competitive in an international market.
   The Blaine County School District has been preparing for the new standards for several years. Students will be tested using the new standards in 2015, although a “field test” for the new standards is planned in Idaho for the spring of 2014.
   Panel members for the Nov. 19 meeting are Rod Gramer, CEO of Idaho Business for Education; Jenny Emery Davidson, director of the Blaine Center for the College of Southern Idaho; Evelyn Johnson, executive director of the Lee Pesky Learning Center; Angie Martinez, School District director of curriculum, teaching and learning; Darlene Dyer, Wood River High School language arts teacher; and Kathy Baker, a School District trustee.
   There is no charge for the meeting. A question-and-answer session will follow the panel discussion.
