Film series kicks off

Club meets Thursday nights in Ketchum

By EXPRESS STAFF

This winter, the Magic Lantern Cinema, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and the new Magic Lantern Film Society, formerly Movie Club, will kick off a season of movies ranging from documentaries, Broadway performances, dramatic independent films, classic Oscar Award-winning movies, cult classics and more nearly every week through May 2014.
The series will include guest speakers as well as costume parties and after-film-screening gatherings. Tickets prices will vary and can be purchased at the Magic Lantern Cinema box office or at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, both in Ketchum, for films sponsored by The Center. Most films will screen on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. Check listings at The Center and Magic Lantern Cinema websites for updates.
The season begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, with “Smokey Joe’s Café: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller,” which is Broadway’s longest-running musical revue. From its first performance at Broadway’s Virginia Theatre, “Smokey Joe’s Café” was an enormous hit with audiences and critics alike.
On Thursday, Nov. 14, get back in costume for an evening of “Blazing Saddles” with an after-party gathering at The Cornerstone Bar and Grill. “Blazing Saddles” is a 1974 satirical Western comedy film directed by Mel Brooks. The movie was nominated for three Academy Awards, and is ranked No. 6 on the American Film Institute’s 100 Years ... 100 Laughs list.
On Thursday, Nov. 21, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts will present “Herb & Dorothy 50x50,” which is the follow-up film to Megumi Sasaki’s award-winning documentary “Herb & Dorothy” (2008). “Herb & Dorothy 50x50” captures the last chapter of the Vogel’s extraordinary life and their gift to the nation, raising various questions on art, and what it takes to support art in today’s society.
On Thursday, Dec. 5, Magic Lantern Cinema will present “Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical,” which stars David Hasselhoff. On Thursday, Dec. 12, The Center will present “Pompeii from the British Museum.” The first ever cinema event from the British Museum is an exclusive private view of the major exhibition “Life and Death in Pompeii and Herculaneum.”
