Speed records shattered at 5th annual Sun Valley Road Rally

Previous speed records for the Sun Valley Road Rally were shattered on Saturday when numerous cars exceeded speeds of 200 miles per hour.
“Up to this point, 198.4 mph was the top speed in the rally,” said Michael David, executive director of the Blaine County Community Drug Coalition, which organized the event. “I think the cool thing is that we had 14 cars go over 200 mph this year.
“Right out of the chute, Bob Shillington, who has won the rally previously, hit a speed of 209 in the first run of the day.”
Shillington, driving a 2008 Porsche GT2RS, later achieved a speed of 211 mph, but his wasn’t the fastest for the event. A top speed of 230.2 mph was achieved by professional driver Butch Leitzinger driving a company-owned 2013 Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse.
David said there were 57 total runs for the 5th annual road rally, which is held on a 3.2-mile stretch of state Highway 75 north of Ketchum between the Wood River and Cathedral Pines campgrounds.
“We really want to thank the SNRA for letting us have it there because it sort of creates the beauty for this event,” David said.
The road rally is the major fundraiser for the Community Drug Coalition, an organization with the mission of keeping youngsters from using illegal drugs and alcohol. David said Tuesday that totals were still being calculated but estimated that the event grossed about $300,000.
The money includes fees—$1,000 per run—paid by the drivers, sponsor contributions, ticket sales to the viewing area for the race, money generated by the Ketchum Cruise parade on Friday, tickets for the “VIP street party dinner and auction” Saturday evening, and funds raised through the raffle of a 2013 Porsche Boxster.
The drawing was held at Saturday’s VIP party and the winner was Kim Irwin, of Eagle.
“The car cost us $50,000 and our raffle ticket sales will be around $120,000,” David said.
“We raised a lot of money for the Drug Coalition,” David said. “It was an exciting event. The Bugattis brought a buzz to the community.”
Dave Stone, one of the rally founders and the owner of Sun Valley Auto Club, agreed that this year’s event was the most exciting yet.
“As far as I know, the event had no complaints and everyone involved had a great time,” Stone said. “This event has turned into a great community event and is great for local business.”
