St. Luke’s is a jewel in the valley’s crown

   Most of us who live in the Wood River Valley already know how lucky we are, but sometimes something comes along to remind us of just how lucky. This happened to me two weeks ago, when I went into hospital to be given a total hip replacement. Home after only two days, and now already walking with a cane (but still watched over by a wonderful physiotherapist and a nurse making regular house calls), I simply must remind us all of yet another jewel in the crown of Ketchum; St Luke’s hospital.
   Quite apart from the skill and professionalism of every single person who took such good care of me, I have never encountered such kindness and compassion, such smiles and encouragement, such 24/7 support, such delicious food (Vegetarian? No problem.).
   Also, the cheerful visits of several wagging therapy dogs, who somehow removed the last wretched memories of previous hospital stays in England and Switzerland: Dour, ugly wards overseen by fierce starched matrons who terrorized the patients and nurses alike, lofty surgeons who barely addressed a word to you, strictly enforced visiting hours, revolting food. Trying to understand the stark contrast, one particular thing stands out. I didn’t meet one single person—from my wonderful surgeon to the smiling young girl who bought in my meals—who didn’t love being part of the brilliant team that makes St Luke’s such a shining example of what a hospital can be at its very best.
   I can’t begin to thank you all for your kindness to me, and for your many skills—which are soon going to allow me to get back on the trails and bike paths of our beautiful valley. You are stars, one and all, and I love every one of you!
