County appoints comp plan committee
    Blaine County commissioners recently initiated an update of the Blaine County Comprehensive Plan and announced the appointment of a seven-member steering committee to help guide the update process.
    The appointees are: Randy Flood, Dick Fosbury, Len Harlig, Megan Stevenson, Linda Thorson, Ana Torres and Will Miller.
    “These individuals each bring valuable experience, diverse backgrounds and professionalism to the Comprehensive Plan Update process,” said Commissioner Larry Schoen. “We look forward to working with them and getting this project under way.”
    The steering committee will begin work with Blaine County staff and the Planning and Zoning Commission to recommend an outline of primary goals as well as a plan format, means of public outreach and useful information resources.

City hires river park consultant
    Plans for Ketchum’s proposed River Park at Sun Peak took another step forward this week with the selection of the Fort Collins, Colo., office of AECOM to review an environmental assessment of the project for the Bureau of Land Management.
    The firm was selected by and works directly for BLM and replaces a staff team that normally would review the environmental assessment. Recent staff and budget cuts have left BLM unable to perform the work itself.
    The city of Ketchum and the Wood River Land Trust, which are eager to see the project move ahead, are reimbursing BLM for the cost of the review, said Jennifer L. Smith, Ketchum parks and recreation director.
    The city has asked the BLM for permission to use approximately 316 acres of federal property, including a parcel north of the city near the Hulen Meadows subdivision, for conservation and recreation enhancements. Plans include restoration of degraded portions of the Big Wood River and adjacent wildlife habitat and recreational lands, as well as creation of a whitewater park and a municipal well.
    The city reports that BLM expects to take public comment on the proposed land conveyance within the next few months.

Events deadline is July 31
    The Ketchum Events Commission announced that July 31 is its sponsorship deadline for proposed events during the months of November 2013 through May 2014.
    The city of Ketchum offers support for new events that are in their first three years of existence and that bring an economic boost to the area’s economy. Applications for sponsorship can be found online at ketchumidaho.org or through the Parks & Recreation Department at 900 Third Ave. North at Atkinson Park in Ketchum.
